THE National Trust drafted in an unusual team of volunteers this week to help with repair work on Roseberry Topping.

Six llamas, traditionally found on the slopes of the Andes in South America, were brought in to carry stone up Little Roseberry for dry stone walls and fencing materials on Roseberry Topping.

Jose, Carlos, Rodrigo, Santos, Pablo and Philippe can usually be found at Wellington Lodge, Ravenscar, near Scarborough, where they are looked after by Bruce and Ruth Wright..

Mark Bradley, area warden for the National Trust, said: "The llamas are obviously more cost-effective than a helicopter, and in this wet weather will offer less impact on the ground compared with a quad bike or tractor.

"The work of the llamas is part of the work programme of the site, but we hope to utilise them in establishing walks around Roseberry, a job they currently do at Ravenscar."

The initial dates for the walks are May 20, June 16 and July 21.

Mr Bradley added: "The trust is always looking for volunteers - but you don't have to be a llama to be one."
