Facilities to deter bicycle thieves have been designed by city council's engineers.
The cycle stand, created by Sunderland City Council, promises good security, is easy to use and pedestrian-friendly.
The first batch will be sited in commercial areas throughout the city and surrounding district.
Among the car parks to benefit are: Newbottle Street and Queens Way in Houghton-le-Spring; Front Street, Hetton; High Street, Easington Lane; the Shiney Row Centre; and Concord Shopping Centre, Washington.
Project engineer Mammad Shafie said: " Many of us are unaware of the demand for cycling that exists.
"The council aims to promote cycling and encourage employers who may have unwittingly discouraged cycling to provide better facilities for cyclists, to encourage their workforce to cycle to work."
It is hoped the cycle lanes, which link up local routes with national cycle routes in the city, and more cycle parking facilities, will help Sunderland quadruple the number of cyclist using roads by 2012.
