CALLS have been made for a leading councillor to resign over a blunder which resulted in hundreds of workers being wrongly told their pay was to be cut.
Councillor George Dunning, leader of the Labour group on Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, challenged cabinet member Councillor Glyn Nightingale to quit. He said he was stunned by the error caused by a computer glitch.
"It beggars belief that Redcar and Cleveland Council can send out hundreds of letters after the job evaluation process, informing staff that they would lose thousands of pounds from their salaries.
"Why were these letters not checked before being posted out to staff?
"I sincerely hope that Redcar and Cleveland Council can redress the problem and send out the correct letters to staff; people who have served this Council well deserve better.
Coun Nightingale said: "I have no intention of resigning. It is obviously regrettable this has happened.
"Staff and residents should be assured things are not being left in abeyance and this will be sorted out pretty quickly."
