AN event to help improve communities in Darlington has challenged decision-makers in the town to look again at facilities for young people.
The event on Saturday presented projects by the Community Cohesion Team undertaken with young people in the town to highlight different cultures, promote race equality and improve communities.
A documentary film on young people's views of life in Darlington, called Darlington Sorted Or Not?, was shown, plus a demonstration by Indian dancers, a drama production by young people, speakers and workshops.
There was also a formal talk by Councillor Bill Dixon, chairman of the Darlington Drug And Alcohol Team and deputy leader of Darlington Borough Council.
He said: "This was a great event. It challenged adult wisdom on what is provided for young people. In the video they say what they want to see in the town. They talk about more youth clubs and safe places to meet, somewhere warm, dry and safe, where they won't be constantly moved on.
"It may make for uncomfortable viewing for some decision-makers in the town, but we have to accept we do not have the answers. They know best about what they want.
"We have to talk to young people and listen to them. Anyone about to make a decision about young people should see this video - it will be used to inform decision-making for possibly the next five years."
The Community Cohesion Team is part of the Community Safety Partnership. Forthcoming projects include a school and community newsletter, drama workshops, concerts, and a website for refugees and asylum communities.
