CRAIG LIDDLE believes Saturday's draw with promotion-chasing Torquay is proof that Darlington can compete with the best in Division Three.
A week after taking a point at leaders Doncaster, Quakers moved five points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-1 draw at home to Torquay at the weekend.
And while Liddle was disappointed to surrender a one-goal lead for a second successive week, the Darlington defender remained upbeat.
"We're happy that we've taken a point against one of the better sides we've played this season," said Liddle.
"It is disappointing that for a second week running we've thrown the lead away.
"In that space of time we've played two of the top three teams and haven't been beat so we are heading in the right direction.
"I think they were happy with a point which is a good plus point for us.
"We still need a couple more wins to make sure we're safe but to come off feeling disappointed shows how far we've come.
"We had the better chances to win but I think they edged it because they had more possession. They moved the ball around a bit better than us."
Quakers have lost just once in their last 12 games and Liddle admitted: "We've had a decent run, which is a good job, otherwise we would have been dead and buried by now."
Liddle was quick to single out defensive partner Joey Hutchinson at the weekend.
The former Birmingham City defender passed a late fitness test to keep his place alongside Liddle and Matt Clarke at the back.
And the Teessider looked solid throughout, earning the plaudits of Liddle.
"The lads were delighted that Joey played because he's a big part of the side," said Liddle.
"For such a young lad he has so much confidence and always looks comfortable on the ball.
"He's had a great season for us and for me he's a great player to play alongside."
