CHILDREN from a school near Darlington proved top detectives in a chemistry event.
The team from Hurworth School Computing and Maths College took part in the Salters' Festival of Chemistry at the University of Durham's Queen's Campus, in Stockton.
The morning session, in which Hurworth competed against 12 schools from around the region, was called the Salterstown Mystery.
Pupils had to carry out a variety of forensic experiments and work as a team to identify the murderer in a scenario.
The Hurworth team, consisting of Matthew Hudspith, Kerri Jayne Healy, Josh Roberts and Jeremy Evans, came out top, winning certificates and £100 for the school's science department.
The afternoon included the pupils taking part in a series of experiments investigating the acidity scale of plants.
This was followed by an entertaining demonstration on the science of the planets.
