Detectives investigating an horrific stabbing, which left the victim fighting for his life in hospital, have today arrested a 29-year-old man.

Wayne Armstrong was apprehended by officers in Durham City at about 10am and is now being questioned about an attack on 31-year-old Jeffrey Brown, in Darlington, at the weekend.

Mr Armstrong, who is originally from the Spennymoor area, was arrested in the city's North Road and taken to the local police station.

He was later transferred to the Darlington station, where he is being quizzed about the knife attack.

Police had taken the unusual step of releasing a photograph of Mr Armstrong and naming him as someone they urgently wanted to talk to.

Mr Brown was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to remove a kidney.

The incident took place at about 4pm on Sunday. Police are still anxious to hear from the driver of a red car who witnessed an argument between the pair and shouted at them to stop fighting.
