AN exciting development is taking place in the grounds of a Teesside school.
Hundreds of willow trees are being planted and woven together by pupils of North Ormesby Primary School, Middlesbrough, with the help of professional willow weavers, to create a maze.
Deputy headteacher Joanna Paul said: "The living willow maze will provide a shaded area for outdoor play, a habitat for wildlife and opportunities for environmental education for the pupils."
The maze is being planted in front of the school and is in addition to 200 native trees recently planted to create a quieter and greener place for pupils to learn and play, screening the view of businesses and a busy road.
The idea of a maze was inspired by a talk given by local artist Steve Tomlinson on the history of mazes.
It enthused the children so much that they asked for one of their own.
Willow Weavers from Willowpool Designs are introducing the youngsters to the ancient craft.
The project has been paid for by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, the North Ormesby Neighbourhood Management group and the Countryside Agency.
