THERE was a late rush of entries on the last day of a short story competition launched in the North-East.

Organised by Darlington's Inscribe Media Ltd and backed by The Northern Echo, Orange and Darlington Arts Centre, The Short Story Competition has attracted huge interest.

By the end of yesterday, 535 entries had been received and the website established by The Northern Echo to promote the competition had received thousands of hits.

The winners will be selected by a judging panel of writers Peter Mortimer, from Cullercoats, North Tyneside, and Wendy Robertson, from Bishop Auckland, County Durham, and Stan Dean, of Darlington, retired chief librarian for County Durham and experienced short story competition judge,

First prize is £300 and a two-night trip to the presentation of the Orange Prize for Fiction, in London, on June 8.

The winners will be announced next month.
