PARENTS have expressed concern about plans to move pupils while building on a new school takes place.

Freebrough Community College is split into three sites at Skelton, Loftus and Brotton.

A decision was made in July to create a single site at Brotton for the 1,000-pupil school.

From September, while building work is under way, all Freebrough's year seven and year eight children will be taught at Skelton and students in years nine, ten and 11 will be taught at Loftus.

The 360 students at the Brotton centre will be moved to the Skelton and Loftus sites and, depending on their age, children from the Skelton and Loftus sites will also be moved to merge with their respective age groups.

A public meeting was held on Tuesday for parents to discuss the plans.

Many complained about the amount of travelling the plans will entail and disruption to pupils.

Councillor Helen McLuckie, from Skelton has a 12-year-old daughter who is a pupil at the school. She said: "It will be very traumatic, especially for the current year sevens, who will have to move to Skelton in September to join year eight, then to Loftus the following year for year nine, then to the new school at Brotton for year ten."

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Steve Kay, said the new arrangements were the best way to educate the children away from the dangers of building work.

The council said it was organising a daily fleet of coaches to transport children from Brotton to either Skelton or Loftus.
