Durham: On Sunday, March 21 Durham's under-16s played in the North Midway League at Herringthorp, Rotherham.
The Durham team beat Yorkshire and Lincolnshire 6-4 but lost 8-2 to event winners Lancashire and 6-4 to third place Warwickshire. This gave the Durham team a very credible fourth place.
The team consisted of: Boys: Perry Cook, John-Paul Cosgrove (Sunderland), Scott Carnell (Durham), Scott Iveson (Darlington) and Iain Defty (N Aycliffe). Girls: Charlotte Heads (Wynyard), Ruth Mackenzie, Sarah Boyle (Durham), Katie Zissler (Darlington) and Laura Parnell (Chester-le-Street).
On Saturday, March 20 at Gateshead Leisure Centre the Durham under-11 restricted tournament took place.
In the boys singles the no. 1 seed Matthew Andrews (Gateshead) reached the final without conceding a point. The second finalist Taigh Conner-Watson (B Castle) also played exceptionally well, conceding only five points. Matthew proved strong for Taigh and won 21-7.
These two boys teamed up in the boys doubles and won easily losing only three points. The runners-up were James Burns (B Castle) and Timothy Briggs (Aycliffe).
The girls singles saw Holly Smith (Sunderland) rated no. eight in the Country head one group whilst Rebecca Bolden also of Sunderland ranked no. ten in the Country head the second group. Both girls lived up to their National ranking and won easily through to the final both beating their semi opponents Hannah Barker, (Stockton) and Pippa Muscat (Seaham) 21-0. Holly who is only nine-years-old out played Rebecca in the final to win 21-4, but both girls showed immense promise for the future.
These two girls also teamed up in the girls doubles and won convincingly beating their singles semi opponents who had also teamed up 21-4 in the decider.
The mixed doubles saw Rebecca gain revenge on Holly when she partnered Matthew Andrews and Holly partnered Taigh winning 21-15 in the deciding match to give both girls two titles and to make it a clean sweep of titles for Matthew.
