A PIONEERING medical centre specifically for older people was opened yesterday.

The Galvani Practice, based at Carter Bequest Community Hospital, Middlesbrough, aims to provide a wide range of services for patients living in the 41 nursing and residential homes in the Middlesbrough and Eston areas, or who are in-patients at Carter Bequest or the Intermediate Care Centre.

It has been opened by Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust.

Led by nurse practitioner Allana Massingham, the practice will specifically look at treating the health needs of older people, including managing chronic conditions - such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma and coronary disease.

Patients will be visited by Mrs Massingham, who will be supported by a specialist GP, practice secretary and practice administrator.

The practice is named after the town of Galvani in Bologna, Italy, an area renowned for its approach to the integration of older people in society.

Mrs Massingham said: "Although the practice is small at the moment, the aim is to develop the service so that it can be offered to all nursing and residential homes in the future."
