THE role of women in the country houses of England is coming under scrutiny in a new exhibition.
Maids and Mistresses, which is being staged at Castle Howard, near Malton, until October 31, is a project being pioneered by the Yorkshire Country House Partnership.
Castle Howard, along with six other Yorkshire country houses is hosting a series of events, activities and interpretative displays which will focus on the role of women in the country house.
The exhibition brings together mothers, wives, and daughters as well as cooks, maids and housekeepers and gives visitors the chance to find out who really had the power and influence at Castle Howard.
