COUNTY Durham's oldest theatre is preparing to take on the region's big boys this winter.

For the first time in its long history, the Empire Theatre in Consett is to stage a professional pantomime, featuring well-known TV celebrities.

While it has a strong tradition of pantomimes by amateur groups, it has never attracted a professional company for the festive season.

Steve Howell, head of leisure services for Derwentside District Council, said: "The fact that a panto company will come to the Empire and share the risk is indicative of how they have seen the Empire grow and develop.

"This is another step towards becoming one of the leading theatres in the region."

The building underwent a £1m refurbishment in March last year and has since established itself as a sought-after venue for touring companies.

Theatre manager Nick Wiggins said: "This will be the first time we have ever had a professional, commercial panto in the district.

"We are taking on the big boys.

"It will have a star name attached and we have our feelers out for somebody from EastEnders or Hollyoaks."

North-East company Stage Further will produce Jack and the Beanstalk for the Empire.

It follows the success of the company's production of Pinocchio at the venue last year, which was a sell-out.

"This will be a completely new project for both of us," said Mr Wiggins. "To some extent, we are taking a shot in the dark, but we will be sharing the risk with Stage Further."

Jack and the Beanstalk runs at the Empire from December 18 to December 30. Tickets are already available, at a discount price of £8.50, until August.
