STUDENTS helped to celebrate 30 years of local government in North Yorkshire.
Members of the student council at the Allertonshire School joined officers and county councillors to plant an oak sapling in the grounds of County Hall, in Northallerton, near a seating area designed to encourage communication and friendship.
The ceremony, one of a number of events being planned in the next six months, was attended by some of the council's longest-serving staff and members.
Council leader John Weighell said: "The venue and the sapling represent youth, reflecting the importance of children to the county's future. The oak tree also represents timeless wisdom."
