THE dramatic re-enactment of the last stand of a Viking warrior is among the highlights of the holiday entertainment in a North City.

The Jorvik Viking centre, in York, is hosting a series of events during the spring, starting in the Easter break.

Spring into Science, which will complement the centre's Unearthed exhibition, will run during the Easter and May half-term school holidays.

The highlight of the Easter programme will be a dramatic piece of street theatre in Coppergate Square, called Last Stand of a Warrior.

Forensic archaeologists from York Archaeological Trust have pieced together evidence from the skeleton of a warrior found in York - on display in the exhibition - to discover how he died in battle.

And the Jorvik Vikings will recreate the warrior's story and his final encounter.

The Unearthed exhibition reveals the secrets of bones, explaining how archaeologists have been able to build up a picture of life and death from Viking to medieval times.

The skeleton in the exhibition is of a man aged between 18 and 25 who is believed to have died in battle. It reveals and explains how he received his extensive injuries, caused by both sword and spear.
