A Darlington man appeared in court over the weekend charged with the murder of student Lee Walker.
Lloyd Smith, 29, of Corporation Road, Darlington, is also charged with attempting to steal Mr Walker's passport, cash and personal stereo.
He appeared before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates on Saturday and spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
Mr Smith's solicitor Graham Hunsley made no application for bail and the defendant was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Thursday at Teesside Crown Court.
Mr Walker was found unconscious on Skinnergate on Monday night outside the Barsize public house.
He died in James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, on Wednesday.
Over the weekend, floral tributes were placed close to the spot in Skinnergate where he was found.
