BEACON status has been awarded to four of the region's local authorities in recognition of their commitment to delivering quality public services.
Darlington Borough, Middlesbrough and Stockton Borough councils have received the honour for their work on Crime and Disorder Partnerships.
Tynedale Council was given its award for promoting tourism.
Alan Brown, director of the regional crime reduction team for the North-East, said: "This is well-deserved recognition for the three councils for their work in reducing crime and ensuring safer, more secure communities. Their status as beacon councils means that others can look to emulate, adopt and learn from practices that these councils have pioneered."
It is the first time Stockton Council has received the award.
Councillor Martyn Ingram, the authority's cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: "This really is excellent news. We had to come through a tough process to get this award."
Local Government Minister Nick Raynsford said: "We all have the right to expect to feel safe and secure within our communities, to have well-run schools for our children and decent housing or good quality care for the vulnerable in our society."
