A PLAN to transform a school's grounds into an outdoor classroom has been launched.

Children at Neville's Cross Primary School, in Durham, have come up with suggestions for their playground.

The first part of the project consists of three tepees made from willow, which were weaved by Jim Bedingfield.

Headteacher Hazel Bullock said: "The children have helped create tepees from living willow.

"They can watch the structures grow and by the summer they will be ready for them to play in."

Other ideas include a wildlife area with a pond and bushes to attract insects and birds. There will also be a garden, sports pitches and a quiet area.

The work is expected to cost £50,000 and will take place over the next five years.

Mrs Bullock said: "This project will take a long time to complete and many things may change but I want our children to learn, using the outdoor classroom as well as the traditional, indoor rooms.

"I want them to be able to play and learn in a more stimulating environment."
