PEOPLE living in a seaside town can see a £33.6m coastal defence scheme close up.
So far, Scarborough residents have been kept well away from construction on the sea defences for safety reasons.
But the contractors and the borough council are ready to show off the project, which is one of the biggest of its kind under way in Europe.
On May 13, an open evening has been organised when groups of between ten and 15 people will be given guided tours of the works from 5pm to 9pm.
They will get a closer look at the rocks and at huge concrete blocks, known as accropodes, being installed to protect Marine Drive, Holms and East Pier, as well as the wave return wall.
Councillor Godfrey Allanson, Scarborough Borough Council's cabinet member for environment, transport and public health, said: "This is a chance for people to see history in the making.
"This coast defence scheme is a massive undertaking for Scarborough Borough Council and its partners and something that will protect and preserve our coastline for future generations to enjoy.
"A lot has been said and written about the scheme.
"This is an opportunity for people to get a close look for themselves at this tremendously challenging project as it is being carried out."
The event is open to individuals and groups.
