volunteers are needed to help provide emotional and practical support for witnesses and their family and friends.
The Witness Service, at Northallerton Magistrates' Court, is run by independent charity Victim Support and supports prosecution and defence witnesses before, during and after the trial.
Volunteers talk to witnesses before going to court and can be on hand at the court to help out. While they cannot discuss evidence or give legal advice, they can show people around court and tell them what to expect.
Barbara Douds, witness service co-ordinator, said: "To ensure the witness service maintains this vital service, more volunteers are required. Training is to a high standard and looking after witnesses can be a very rewarding experience."
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can call (01609) 781066.
