INFORMATION on Newcastle's heritage will soon be available on a website.
Tyneside Life and Times is being created by the Local Studies and Family History Centre, run by the city council's libraries service. It has been backed by the National Lottery's New Opportunities Fund.
The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor Margaret Carter, said: "This exciting project not only celebrates the cultural heritage of Newcastle, it will also bring the past back to life.
"By visiting this website, people can take a step back through Tyneside's history and learn about our excellent historic foundations, on which the city is building its continued success."
Containing more than 8,000 pictures from the late 18th Century to the present, the website will cover landscapes, streets, industrial and social history, leisure, and culture. It will also focus on people.
The purpose of the website is to celebrate the achievements of the area and provide some surprises for those who know Newcastle well, especially for those researching their family's past on Tyneside.
Many of the pictures on the website will show streets and building that have been demolished, but it also aims to reflect the thriving city Newcastle has become.
The website will be at www. tynesidelifeandtimes.org.uk
