Principia League Cups

Redcar defeated Norton III to lift the men's cup in the Principia team handicap knockout competition at Nunthorpe SC recently, while Sunderland Racquets had a close win over Nunthorpe to take the women's title.

Division two side Redcar had a comfortable 4-1 win in the final against Norton of the third division after seeing off Aycliffe in the semi-finals without losing a rubber.

Hambleton Ales North Yorkshire League

A Knaresborough side fluffed a golden opportunity to secure promotion to Division One in their last match of the season.

Knaresborough II needed to beat already relegated Wensleydale III team, but lost 2-1.

That defeat paved the way for Boroughbridge to take the second promotion spot behind Division Two Champions Harrogate Squash III.

Hambleton Ales North Yorkshire League Cup

Bedale have clinched a North Yorkshire league and squash cup double for the first time.

Shortly after clinching the Hambleton Ales North Yorkshire League First Division title they captured the knock-out cup, defeating Wensleydale 3-2.

Phil Martin won the last match on court to seal the victory. But Dave Smiley had paved the way with a pivotal win over Nick Brown in a see-saw clash.

In the corresponding B contest Catterick Garrison secured their first success since returning to the league last season beating Harrogate Squash C 3-2.

Earlier the Catterick side had won the first North Yorkshire League Championship in the 1975-76 season.

Present captain Tim Jones had a special reason to celebrate. His squash win came just after celebrating his commissioning.

Thirsk player Steve Whiteley won the North Yorkshire First Division Individual Championship beating Wensleydale's Nick Brown in the final 9-6 9-7 6-9 9-6.

Whiteley, who lives in Harrogate is the brother Richard the noted table tennis player, last season won the corresponding Division Two title.

En route to the final he defeated holder Phil Martin (Bedale) in a shock 3-1 scoreline.

This season the Division Two title was taken by David Duncalf (Harrogate Squash) a 9-5 9-5 9-6 winner over club colleague Adam Hughes.

Duncalf is the brother of Harrogate-based England international Jenny, also a member at Harrogate Squash Club where she plays for their Yorkshire Premiership side.

Thorpe Perrow's John Hart won the Division Three title. He beat Duncan Hill (Harrogate Squash) 7-9 9-6 3-9 9-5 9-2.
