OApril 4 Micheal O'Sullivan warmed-up for the London Marathon in two week's time with another impressive run in the Wallsend 10K road race finishing in 37minutes 23seconds. Brent Morfoot, in his first race for some considerable time, finished in 42minutes 11seconds.
At the Grisdale Forrest trail race over ten miles Peter Milburn finished 11th in a time of 62minutes 22seconds with Susan Milburn 67th 2nd veteran lady in a time of 73minutes 40seconds out of 253 finishers.
Crook and District
Kevin Allen ran a personal best at Wallsend 10km in a time of 36.51 which gave him 17th overall and a good marker for his forthcoming London Marathon next week.
Two members took part in the Paris Marathon; Gerry Hehir ran 3 hrs 33 mins and Martin Lowrie close behind on 3hrs. 36mins.
Mike Mallen returned to fell racing after a ski-ing accident and produced a good 1 hr 37 mins for the 13 mile Guisborough Moors Fell Race.
Thirsk and
Sowerby Harriers
Eleven Harriers entered the testing Guisborough Moors Fell Race, the 11th race in the Winter Series, over a 12.5 mile course which includes Roseberry Topping, Little Roseberry and Captain Cook's Monument. Conditions were quite good for running, in spite of heavy rain over the previous few days.
Former club runner, Charles Stead, won the race, in 85.01 minutes, with Peter Wilkin 10th in 92.21, Richard Hall 12th in 93.13, Noel Clough 45th in 105.13, just ahead of Stewart Mechie, 48th in 105.22, Alan Somers 65th in 110.07, Angela Hall 78th in 111.39, Alan Wikeley 88th in 114.16, Caroline Pollard 101st in 116.47, Alasdair Thorpe 121st in 126.15, Nicola Thorpe 137th in 129.44 and Pat Kirby 142nd in 131.40.
The women's team finished in an excellent 1st place and the men's team came 3rd in their section.
The Meanwood Trail Race was also an off road event of 7.5 miles with muddy and hilly conditions. Gary Devine of Pudsey and Bramley was the winner, in 44.17, Andrew Wilson finished 214th in 68.04, Fiona Wilson 234th in 69.04, Ian Codling 237th in 69.23 and Marian Codling 292nd in 83.27. The 304 finishers in this race were pleased to take home a specially brewed botle of beer!
The Ackworth Half Marathon, a road race described as undulating, formed part of the training schedule of some of the entrants for the London Marathon. Ernie Huck finished 198th in 1.31.12, Graham Banks 317th in 1.39.45, Peter Scanlon 506th in 1.53.56 and Ian Codling 573rd in1.59.24. There were 686 finishers.
Guisborough Moors
Charles Stead (Northumberland Fell Runners), winner of the Guisborough Moors race back in 1998, won the 2004 race in 85.01 with a winning margin of over two minutes from Andy Bissell Knavesmire) with Chris Miller (Harrogate) claiming third place.
But placed local runner was Jon Skidmore (Nth Yks Moors AC) in fifth place with his team mate Brian Roberts the leading O-40 veteran in sixth place.
The other veterans class winners were John Metson (Northumberland Fell Runners) and Richie Clarke (Nth Yks Moors AC).
Helen Johnson (Bingley), the club's first winner for 20 years, won the ladies race by over five minutes from Joanne Newton (CMC) with Jen Milsom (Cleveland Police) the leading local counter in third place.
The veterans winners were Kate Wiggins (Knavesmire), Sue Haslam (Scarborough) and Sandra Jemson (New Marske).
Northumberland Fell Runners won both the men's and women's team events.
The final races in the Northern Runners Winter series is at Clay Bank East on April 18.
