Tennis World Ladies team claimed their first win in the KIA National Club League competition on Sunday by beating Northumberland 4-2.
The competition is the largest singles / doubles based league competition in Great Britain and includes 47 of the nation's best club teams. Tennis World are competing in the National Division One (North Division) of the competition. The grand final will take place in September and Sunday's win is certainly a great start to this prestigious tournament for the Middlesbrough ladies.
The team included Lynsey Davison (No.1), Sophie Proctor (No.2), Jo Cunliffe (No.3), Sarah Harding (No.4) and Libby Fletcher (No.5 played doubles).
The match was level after singles play with Lynsey Davison and Sophie Proctor winning their matches but Jo Cunliffe and Sarah Harding lost their respective singles leaving it to the doubles to decide the match. Tennis World proved their strength in doubles play when Davison & Cunliffe won comfortably as the number one pairing, followed by Fletcher & Proctor who won a close match to clinch the tie!
Team Captain Jo Cunliffe, after TW's first win in the Division, said: "This is a great result for our first match and all of the team were fantastic. Lynsey and Sophie proved their class in singles play.
"However, myself and Sarah, who had been recruited less than 24 hours before the match, competed well but we were unfortunate not to win our respective matches. Ultimately, we knew our strength in the doubles would give us the upper hand to see victory. I'm proud of them and I hope this is a great sign of things to come!"
Tennis World's next match is at home to Holcombe Brook on April 18 at 12pm at home.
