THE FIFTH of six retirement home schemes will open to its first resident on Tuesday.
The Extra Care scheme, at Maple Court, Gloucester Road, Consett, is the result of an agreement between Durham County Council, Hanover Housing Association and builder MJ Gleeson.
MJ Gleeson, which won the contract to build the retirement homes, passed the keys for the fifth scheme to Hanover Housing Association last week.
Maple Court, which has been described as a "real alternative to residential care" is now ready for residents to move in.
The schemes are aimed at older people who, while needing a level of care and support, also value their independence.
Its first resident, Tess Slater, will receive a bouquet and the keys to her home from Hanover Estate manager Kathlyn Baxter and County Durham Care operations supervisor Karen Telford.
Harbour Lodge, in Flamborough Walk, was opened last week.
