BADMINTON players from all over Europe will descend on the North-East next week to compete in the Great North International Student Badminton Tournament.
About 170 players will take part in the event - one of a number of competitions staged annually in European cities.
The tournament, which has been organised by a committee of students from the universities of Durham and Newcastle, will take place at the Eldon Centre, in Newcastle, from Wednesday.
It is partly funded by Yehlex, Newcastle City Council and the universities of Durham and Newcastle, and various fundraising events throughout the year.
Event manager Jennie Evans said the tournament had become very popular.
"We aimed to attract a record of 150 players but, such has been the demand for places, there is a reserve list of players who could not be accommodated," she said.
All the players will attend a civic reception with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Newcastle on the day of their arrival.
