A YOUNG entrepreneur who launched a business from his bedroom to raise some extra pocket money is hoping to turn the venture into a real money-spinner.
Teenager Chris Naylor was looking for a way to earn some money to buy compact discs when he started his company, called Wax Sensations, last summer.
Seeing how popular interior design has become and how much his family and friends' parents spent on candles, the 16-year-old sought out a supplier of decorative candles.
He now stocks a range of candles, from basic tea-lights and traditional church candlesticks, to ornate gel, pebble and scented candles.
Chris, from Langmere, Spennymoor, developed a website so customers can shop online and has created a computer programme to keep track of orders.
With his website receiving about 1,000 hits a months, and after taking 600 orders, he is already looking to expand the business by organising candle parties for people to host in their homes.
His mother, Julie, held a party for friends which made £100 and Chris, an A-level student at St Leonard's Comprehensive School, in Durham, believes it could be the secret to business success.
He said: "Lots of people are visiting the website but not placing orders, but everyone at the party bought something and I think that is going to be the way forward. I've even had inquiries from down South.
"I didn't want to get a part-time job because I still concentrate on my studies, so wanted something I could do from home in my spare time. But if it continues to do well I'd love to do this full-time."
