THE racing world shrugged off recent controversies yesterday as record-equalling crowds enjoyed a glimpse behind the scenes at some of the region's leading stables.
Middleham Open Event boasted one of its best crowds when sunny weather attracted thousands.
Yesterday's attendance was estimated at 7,500, equalling last year's total, which should mean another windfall for local charities, which shared £20,000 from last year's event. The money was presented at a ceremony last year.
Co-ordinator Sue Constantine said: "I hope we can arrange another presentation night this year.
"I think it is important that local people see where the money goes, as they have to put up with a day's disruption for the event itself.''
A survey was carried out at this year's event, which organisers hope will give them clues about the open day's strengths and weaknesses.
Spokeswoman Marcia Ken-nedy said she had found one trend encouraging.
She said: "From the people we spoke to, it would appear a fairly high proportion were not regular racegoers. They came simply because the open event is seen as a great family day out.
"It was also noticeable that quite a few people had joined racehorse syndicates at this year's event."
Trainers Mark Johnston, James Bethell, Karl Burke, Patrick Haslam, Andy Crook, Chris Fairhurst, Micky Hammond, Kate Milligan, George Moore, Jedd O'Keeffe, Chris Thornton, Kate Walton, George and Ann Duffield and John Weymes took part in this year's event.
Last year, stables around Middleham, North Yorkshire, netted more than £4m in prize money.
As well as an opportunity to learn more about the racing world, visitors could also tour the town's new equine veterinary facility, enjoy a country fair and browse market stalls and trade stands.
