RESIDENTS in Hartlepool are being consulted over proposals to create two conservation areas in the town and extend an existing one.
There are six conservation areas in Hartlepool - Headland, Park, Greatham, Seaton Carew, Elwick and Church Street.
But following a recent report to Councillor Moss Boddy, Hartlepool Borough Council's portfolio holder for regeneration and economy, conservation areas are proposed for the Stranton and Grange areas.
It is also proposed to extend the park conservation area to take in part of The Grove, off Grange Road.
The role of designating and reviewing conservation areas in Hartlepool lies with the council under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.
Coun Boddy said: "It is very important we do everything possible to protect areas of our town where there are buildings of special architectural or historic interest.
"The council does have a role to determine and monitor conservation areas and we feel there are merits in the proposals which are being put forward.
"It is, however, important local residents are given an opportunity to air their views and we want to encourage as many people as possible to participate in the consultation exercise."
Residents in the areas will receive a leaflet with details of the proposals. All Hartlepool residents are welcome to air their views.
An exhibition outlining the proposals will be held at the town's Central Library between Saturday and April 30. It will also be held at Grange Road Methodist Church, on May 5, between 1.30pm to 8pm, when council officers will answer any questions.
