A TOWN'S council tenants have been told their rent office will close because of low demand, and a rent payment system will be introduced.
Easington District Council will shut the Parkside housing office, which was open twice a week, on Friday, April 23.
A full housing management service will still be provided at Deneside, Murton and Peterlee Housing Offices, as well as at East Durham Homes' head offices in Easington.
A council spokesman said: "To make paying the rent easier for tenants after that, a new swipe card scheme will be introduced at post offices and other outlets across the district.
"The scheme, allpay.net, allows tenants to benefit from being able to pay their rents more locally and at times that suit them, as many shops are currently open for extended hours and at weekends."
Tenants not using direct debit facilities or in receipt of full housing benefit are being given a swipe card, which they give to the allpay.net facility along with their payment.
The spokeswoman said: "Tenants will still be able to continue paying at area housing offices if they wish, but door-to-door rent collection will be phased out, remaining as a service to the elderly and disabled only.
"Tenants are reminded that non-payment of rent can lead to the loss of their home."
Anyone having difficulties with paying rent is advised to call 0191-527 0501 for help.
