CARLING Cup winners Middlesbrough Football Club have scored an international coup away from the football pitch.
Boro Safety Officer Ron Turnbull is representing the Football Association in Peru this week, advising the South American Football Federation, Conmebol, on safety issues, ahead of two tournaments.
The former Cleveland Police officer is in Lima, which will host the Copa America competition, played between the countries of South America. Peru will also be the setting next summer of the FIFA Under-17s World Cup.
"I hope to give delegates an insight into how the safety culture developed in the UK alongside legislation such as the Taylor Report," said Mr Turnbull.
"The experience of several major disasters, including Hillsborough, has taught us very important lessons which we can pass on."
The club said the visit was a significant honour, with the Riverside Stadium having the best record for spectator safety in the Premiership.
Supporters last year rated Boro best in the league for fan safety and the club's policing and stewarding was highly commended in the FA Premier League's National Fan Survey.
