A GROUP of North-East firefighters are making final preparations for an assault on Everest to raise the flag for equality in all walks of life.

Some of the team members stepped up the pace at the weekend when they met in Durham Market Place to run and walk the equivalent of the journey to the base camp they aim to reach. They also raised more than £600.

Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service Divisional Officer John Robson said: "We are doing the climb to raise awareness and funds for the Whitley Bay-based charity, Show Racism the Red Card.

"The money will be used to buy calendars for schools nationwide, bearing the message of the charity. It is all about equality and fairness for all, whether it be in the workplace or in sport."

Officer Robson is general secretary of the Fire Service Sports and Athletics Association, which is staging the fundraising trip in partnership with the charity.

A group of 18 firefighter staff will be leaving for the Himalayas next Sunday, including nine people from the North-East.

The group will be covering a round trip of 90 miles climbing to a base camp 28,000ft above sea level.
