A FIVE-month-old baby girl injured in an accident on the A19 on Saturday remains in a critical condition in the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
The accident, on the south bound carriageway shortly before 6pm, involved one car, a grey Renault Laguna.
The car was approaching the Peterlee exit when, for reasons as yet unknown, it left the carriageway, careered down the embankment and overturned.
The 22-year-old driver, who comes from Tyneside and his 19-year-old wife were taken to the University Hospital of Hartlepool from where the driver was later released but his wife was detained with neck injuries.
The couple's daughter, who was in the back of the vehicle, suffered serious head injuries.
She was taken to the University Hospital of Hartlepool but later transferred to the paediatric intensive care unit at the James Cook Hospital.
The southbound carriageway of the A19 was closed for almost two hours.
Police accident investigators have appealed for anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward.
Anyone who can provide information is asked to contact the accident investigation unit at Durham's Aykley Heads police headquarters on 0191-375 2159.
