A COASTGUARD has completed a coast-to-coast charity bike ride - in two days.
Paul Waugh, Skinningrove Coastguard's deputy station officer, completed the marathon to raise money for the Butterwick Hospice after meeting the family of Jonathan Baker, 24, who has cancer.
Jonathan's parents, Dennis and Eileen, and their other son, Matthew, 21, from Stockton, were walking between Staithes and Runswick Bay, in North Yorkshire, when their sheepdog, Buddy, got stuck on a cliff ledge last year.
They called for help and seven coastguards, including Mr Waugh, saved the animal.
Mr Waugh kept in touch with the family and decided to cycle from Saltburn to Arnside, near Morecambe Bay, and back to raise funds for the hospice.
He had planned to do the ride over four days, but underestimated his fitness and cycled the 210-mile round-trip in two days on Thursday and Good Friday.
He said: "I was knocked off my bike by a car and fell into a load of mud near Leyburn, but apart from that everything went really well."
"I've raised more than £100 so far but I've still got a lot more to collect."
