BELEAGUERED Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnel has approached the French government about a rescue package.
The new all-French board of the company has demanded a meeting with French transport minister Gilles de Robien to discuss its plans to restructure the group's £6.4bn debt.
The board pledged to seek the intervention of the French and British governments after ousting Eurotunnel's board last Wednesday.
The group's chairman, Jacques Maillot, said the board believed it could renegotiate clauses in the Treaty of Canterbury that ban Eurotunnel from seeking state aid.
