YOUNGSTERS living at a homeless persons' unit are celebrating after getting their own play area.
The enclosed outdoor play area in Colburn, near Catterick, has been created in a joint initiative between Richmondshire District Council and SureStart Colburn and the Two Dales.
Families are housed temporarily at George Nickling House before being found permanent accommodation.
A recent review of the homelessness service in the area had found one of the key concerns of homeless families was the lack of a safe play area for children when staying at the unit.
The council obtained Government funding to convert a disused garden and worked with SureStart, which paid for the toys and equipment.
Sara Smith, head of housing management at Richmondshire District Council, said: "This is an excellent example of how we can make things happen within our community.
"The families identified the need for this facility and now their children have unlimited access to a safe, attractive play area."
SureStart programme co-ordinator Judith Bromfield said: "Play is not only fun but an important part of children's development."
