THE Government Office for the North-East was yesterday celebrating a £20m windfall to help with the regeneration of the region.

One of the largest funding programmes in the area - the European Objective 2 programme - has been awarded the cash to mark its success achieving end of year targets.

Latest European Commission figures show that 1,025 projects have been supported with funding, benefiting 1,200 businesses and 4,000 people living in some of the most disadvantaged communities in the region.

The bonus will be used across the North East for projects that continue to boost regeneration.

Particular emphasis will be placed on continued support of small and medium-sized business by helping them to access new technologies.

Jonathan Blackie, regional director of the Government Office for the North-East, said: "The European funding programme has brought significant benefits to the region and this bonus further helps our work."
