A TEENAGER has been chosen for the Great Britain junior rowing squad just over a year after taking up the sport.
Kristina Stiller, from Low Worsall, near Yarm, is one of six girls selected to row at the German International Regatta for juniors in Munich on May 8 and 9.
The 16-year-old, a student at St Peter's School, York, started sculling just over a year ago with Tees Rowing Club. She was picked for the Great Britain team after attending recent trials at Nottingham Watersports Centre, where 48 scullers were put through their paces.
Kristina was one of the youngest in the group of 16-18-year-olds, but she produced the fastest time in a 2,000m test on the indoor rowing machine and then won a race-off between all the scullers.
She will compete in the double sculls event in Germany, which represents a considerable achievement for someone who has been sculling for such a relatively short time.
Kristina and her partner have been assigned their own Great Britain coach, who will be working with them until the Munich international in May.
Three training camps have also been organised at Dorney Lake, Eton.
