Guisborough experienced Easter agony and ecstasy after winning one local derby and losing another, while also losing one of their most influential players when Craig Baverstock broke his ankle at Thornaby.
The Priorymen went into Easter Monday's home match against Marske United in buoyant mood after successive derby victories over Billingham Synthonia and Thornaby.
Marske came into the game already relegated to the second division after results on Saturday had gone against them, but Guisborough were comprehensively outplayed by a side with nothing left to lose.
Guisborough Town 0
Marske United 2
The visitors attacked from the first whistle and immediately had Guisborough on the back foot. They first went close when Chris Keegans nipped down the left and Jacob Hart almost got a foot to his low shot across the goalmouth. Then on eight minutes Stephen Combellack struck the crossbar with a close-range shot.
Almost 15 minutes had elapsed before Guisborough mounted their first real attack. A sloppy pass down the left fell to Stephen Bell just inside the visitors' area and he cleverly side-stepped a tackle and weaved through the middle before unleashing a ten-yard shot which skidded just wide.
Guisborough continued to apply most of the pressure for the next few minutes and they almost broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when Simon Kasonali sent Ryan into the box, but Thomas arrived with a superb sliding tackle as the striker shaped up to shoot.
Marske stunned the home crowd by taking the lead on 23 minutes when Lee Alexander back-headed a looping header over advancing keeper Jones.
Guisborough tried hard to battle their way back into the mach and had several chances to level the score, but Marske were again in the ascendancy as the half drew to a close.
Marske almost doubled their advantage within seconds of the start of the second half when David Dowd spotted Jones off his line and his 40-yard chip was just tipped over by the keeper. But the visitors did increase their advantage on 62 minutes with a superb goal. A poor clearance fell to Dowd, who fired a curving 20-yard shot into the top corner.
Thornaby 1 Guisborough T 3
Guisborough won a scrappy affair at Teesdale Park last Saturday after storming back from going behind after eight minutes.
They levelled in first-half injury time, then took control of the match during the second half.
Thornaby went ahead when Guisborough defender Darren Mowbray handled and Jamie Clarke slammed home the spot kick.
Tempers flared when Craig Baverstock was booked for a rash challenge on Darren Roulston and several players could have joined him in the book as the tackles flew in.
Guisborough suffered a major blow on 40 minutes when Baverstock went off injured after a 50-50 challenge. The injury was later confirmed as a broken ankle.
The Priorymen equalised deep in first-half stoppage time when a half cleared cross fell to Michael Jameson and he weaved past two defenders in the box before drilling home at the near post.
Guisborough deservedly took the lead on 58 minutes when Steve Ritchie put in a cross which sailed over keeper Adrian Swan for the unmarked Craig Bishop to head home.
The Priorymen made sure of the points on 63 minutes when a Simon Kasonali corner floated over the crowded box for Bishop to drill home his second from 15 yards.
Guisborough entertain Morpeth Town tomorrow in their last home game of the season, kick-off 3pm.
The club will be holding a players presentation night, incorporating a race night, on Friday, May 14, starting at 7.30.
The event is free and open to all supporters and their friends
