Chester-le-Street Town: Town Juniors may only have got as far as West Ham United in the FA Youth Cup Fourth Round but they still managed to win the League Cup for the third time in four years when they beat Walker Central at Prudhoe Town FC on Tuesday evening.
It was the Newcastle side that started the brighter as Chester took 20 minutes to settle in to the game. However, driven by man of the match Robbie Houghton, the Juniors got to grips with things midway through the first period - notably from the time 26-goal striker Chris Laws left the substitutes bench to join the action after an injury to Martin Urwin. The highlight of the first half for Chester was a 21-pass move that saw Houghton's fine effort sale just wide.
Walker themselves threatened on quite a few occasions in the opening period but the Chester defence held firm.
After the interval it was a different story as Chester upped the tempo considerably and it was no surprise when Laws beat his man cleverly before steering the ball into an unguarded net. Back came Walker and Gavin Stoker cleared superbly off the goal line to prevent the Newcastle side's certain equaliser.
Laws then blasted a fine second before strike-partner Andy Bulford joined him off the bench for the last 15 minutes. Bulford also was an instant threat - hitting the bar with a fine dipping effort from just outside the box.
Chester's second half performance was much improved with the defence holding firm for three games in a row - Robbie Blemings in particular had an excellent match.
The Juniors now play Seaham Red Star, Consett and League Champions Walker twice in a tight run in if they are going to lift the Fairs Software League title. Walker visit Moor Park on Monday, April 19 (7.30pm).
Manager Andrew Muxworthy said: "This wasn't our greatest performance of the season by some margin - in fact in the first 45 minutes we were very poor.
"But we never gave up, got in front 15 minutes into the second half and showed a lot of desire to keep going at Walker rather than shutting things up.
"It was a good second half performance and a nice trophy to win."
Chester-le-Street: Connell, Jones, Clough (Bulford 75), Houghton, Blemings, Curry, Stoker, Richardson, Urwin (Laws 17), Taylor (Glazinski 86), R Draper. Subs not used: Wadge, Nevins, Davidson.
Brompton Juniors
In their last match of the season Brompton Under-10 A faced a Redcar B side who had only conceded eight goals all season. The game started at break neck pace with both sets of players showing high quality football from the word go. The Brompton midfield of Robert Maclean, Chris Holmes and Mark Watkinson showed a determination to win every ball and set up a number of attacks which failed to result in the much sought after goal.
Redcar defended strongly and denied Thomas Armstrong, the Brompton striker, any success in front of goal. The attack was equally determined from Redcar and some solid defending from the Brompton pair of Jack Cullen and David Holmes kept them at bay whilst Joe Richards in goal made several fine saves which maintained Brompton's clean sheet.
The first goal came from a Brompton corner which Redcar failed to clear effectively and the ball was picked up on the edge of their goal area by Robert Maclean who moved the ball across to the centre of the box and scored with a stunning right foot shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal. Just before the end of this excellent first half a corner from Redcar was volleyed from the far side of the Brompton box straight into the roof of their net giving the Brompton defence no chance to stop this equaliser.
The Half-time score was 1-1.
The second half continued with dramatic end to end play and for Brompton in particular Joe Richards made two stunning saves which continued to keep them in the match.
With two minutes to go Redcar made a decisive substitution throwing on an extra attacker who within seconds had met a powerful corner and cleanly headed it into the Brompton net. Brompton had time only to mount one further attack which they narrowly failed to convert into that equalising goal which was so desperately needed.
Full-time score was Brompton 1, Redcar 2.
Durham County Council Lomax Enterprises Youth League
Redheugh have emerged as champions at the end of the first season of the competition.
They have completed their fourth round and have 27 points from 12 games and will end at least two points better off than Willington.
Willington, five points adrift of the Reds with a game in hand and Darlington Spraire Lads, are battling it out for the runners-up position. Spraire Lads are two points adrift of Willington and have played the same number of matches.
At the bottom, Consett Badgers end without a point following proud attempt.
The League, which is run by Durham FA, are looking for new clubs for next season and if there is sufficient interest North and South Divisions will be organised.
The aim of the league is to promote junior football on Saturdays and to encourage sides, flexible kick off times can be arranged.
"We leave it to the two sides to decide when to begin. Some clubs prefer an 11am kick off, others like to start around about lunchtime while there are some who prefer the traditional Saturday afternoon kick off. By being flexible we hope to encourage more youngsters into the game," said John Topping who can be contacted on (0191) 3848653.
Riverside Chester-le-Street
Riverside Under-13s went down 4-2 to leaders Grindon. The performance was the old Riverside full of commitment, some good passing play and never giving up, even when four goals down. Phil Blacklock reduced the arrears with a 20-yard shot set up by Marck Broom who then drove home Kane Haig's corner. The whole team played well with Liam Thompson taking the man of the match award.
The Under-14s gained three valuable points away to Nissan thanks to a Brad Hopper hat-trick and two goals from Adam Barker. Final score was Nissan 1, Riverside 5.
