A VILLAGE bowling green has been restored after vandals put the club under threat of closure.
The Kelloe Bowling Club, residents of Kelloe and neighbouring villages celebrated the official reopening with Durham MP Gerry Steinberg.
The green had been vandalised and had deteriorated to an unplayable state.
Bowling club officials and Durham city councillors sought the help of business and trusts to restore the green - which has been used for at least 40 years.
Generous donations were received from Single Regeneration Budget, Premier Waste Management, County Durham Environmental Trust, Durham City Council, Awards for All and the Kelloe and Coxhoe parish councils.
Bowling club chairman Ronny Smalley said: "We are indebted to everyone who participated in this marvellous restoration.
"The green is in excellent condition and is greatly appreciated by the Kelloe residents and will provide healthy recreation for people of all ages."
Ward councillor Terry McDonnell said: " This regeneration of the Bowling Green was achieved by Durham City Council, grant agencies, residents, local businesses and voluntary groups all coming together.
"The transformation, from a derelict eyesore to a recreational facility, will be enjoyed by everyone in the village for many years."
