Durham HQ and Tyne & Wear made progress to the League Cup semi finals, whilst Langbaurgh maintained top spot in the League.
Durham HQ travelled to Stockton with a weakened team , whilst their opponents have one eye on a Cup Final. The game was expected to be a tight affair and it certainly was, with only a single goal separating the two teams. Mick Button headed in for HQ, following a corner after 15 minutes. The home team applied lots of pressure but were unable to break down their resolute opponents. HQ's reward is a semi final with Durham Fire.
Tyne & Wear were up against bottom team Darlington and ran 4-1 winners. The league leaders didn't have all their own way despite playing nine men, with the score only 2-1 at the interval. The Fire team will entertain Newcastle in the other semi final. The Fire team were knocked out of the National Fire Cup last week, when they lost their semi final 4-1 at Greater Manchester. The team had every right to feel heartily aggrieved though, as the tie was cancelled at short notice three weeks ago and then only confirmed the night before on this occasion. Tyne & Wear were only able to field a weakened team in the circumstances and paid the cost.
Langbaurgh stay top after their 7-2 victory at Derwentside. The home team had not played a match for four months and fielded only ten players after starting with nine. Andy Robinson gave Langbaurgh the lead with a 20 yard strike. Paul Dixon equalised and Kevin Maddick it 2-1. Derwentside missed other chances before the visitors struck a post then grabbed an equaliser through Darren Mudd. Early in the second half, Darren Henry scored twice with a header and a scissor kick. Injury reduced the home team to nine and they conceded three more goals, through Mudd's second and one each for Jason Malcolm and Paul Murphy.
Frankland and Durham Fire shared the points in a six-goal thriller. Steve Deven gave Frankland the lead, with Simon Waggott equalising before the break. A Steve Holcroft penalty put the Fire team in front and a goal from Ian Bell extended that lead. Frankland do not give in and Graeme Earle reduced the arrears with 20 minutes to go. The home side secured a share of the points when Paul Oley scored on his debut.
* Easington have unfortunately resigned from the League.
