THE switch on of Middlesbrough Council's latest piece of public art lit up the town centre last night.
Spectra-txt, a colourful ten metre-high sculpture, inspired by Captain James Cook's voyage to Tahiti to witness the transit between Venus and the Sun, was unveiled by Mayor Ray Mallon.
And, in keeping with the Tahiti connection, one of the first text messages was sent from the Pacific island as part of the opening ceremony.
Created by artist Peter Freeman, the sculpture has been designed to change colour when it is sent one of six commands by text message.
