A YOUNG Thai boxer will make his first challenge for a national title today.
Reece McAllister, aged 12, from Newton Aycliffe, has practised the sport since he was two and has high hopes of a win when he fights a Manchester opponent in the 42 kilogram class in the city.
The Woodham Community Technology College pupil, whose other sport is American football, trains with coach Paul Pearson at the Hanuman Thai Boxing Camp at the Fit Factory gym, in Bishop Auckland Market Place.
Another club member, Sam Mitchell, 17, who also attends Woodham, has just won her first big event, an exhibition contest at the 63kg weight.
And Azad Singh, from Newton Aycliffe, is preparing for his own big fight when he competes for a senior British title at 67kg in May.
The camp, which moved to Bishop Auckland from Darlington, has 40 members and is establishing a strong youth section.
Organisers are searching for a Bishop Auckland venue to host a competition of their own.
The club often helps charities by staging displays.
Sponsor Jem Communications recently gave the camp a huge boost by buying a portable boxing ring.
Mr Pearson said: "Thai boxing is part of Thailand's culture and we teach the young people about the country's wonderful history and religion, as well as sport.
"I think Reece has a good chance at winning his first title. It will be close, because the other boy is a good fighter as well, but I think he will just nip it."
Classes are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and Sunday afternoon. For information contact the gym on (01388) 665522, or Mr Pearson on 07812 464745.
