A PLAN to improve the facilities at a Harrogate sports ground has been supported by people living in the area.
The project already has the backing of Harrogate Borough Council, Harrogate and Bilton cricket clubs and Pannal Ash Football Club.
However, people whose homes are around the Almsford ground were asked for their opinions about the £500,000 package, which would see a pavilion being built on the site and the pitches upgraded.
Of the 1,700 forms distributed, 600 were returned. Of those, 80 per cent were in favour of the scheme going ahead.
Backers have promised concerns raised over noise, parking and dog fouling will be addressed as the scheme is developed.
"This is excellent news for the local community, particularly young people, as the enhanced facilities will mean there are more opportunities for taking part in sport,'' said the borough council's cabinet member for leisure, Councillor Pat Jones.
"The overwhelming response from the local community clearly shows how important it is to get on and complete the work, but we will also continue to address the issues raised to ensure the scheme works well and fits in with the local community," Coun Jones said.
A formal planning application will be prepared, while a bid for funding will be made to the Football Foundation.
Pannal Ash Football Club is also hoping to contribute to the cost through its own fundraising efforts.
