A COUNCIL has staged an event to encourage bike owners to use pedal power now spring has arrived.
Durham County Council, which is encouraging people to take to the county's network of paths and cycle routes, held a surgery so riders could get their bikes checked to make sure they are in good condition for the months ahead.
The Dr Bike event was held at the Clayport Library, in Durham, on Saturday and featured free checks by local firms.
Durham Police security marked bicycles and free cycling maps, guided ride leaflets and safety information were also available.
Riders also had the chance to test their machines by going on a short run to Old Durham.
"Now that the winter weather is hopefully behind us, spring is a great time to start thinking about cycling again either for pleasure, health or short journeys when the car is not really needed,'' said Elaine Wood, the county council's travel awareness officer.
"The cycle route network in the county is developing all the time and the Dr Bike surgery is a good way to ensure that your bike is up to scratch before setting off.''
Cycle maps are available from Ben Dellow at County Hall on (0191) 383 3721.
