SUPERMARKET shoppers were in for a surprise when they were greeted by shire horses as they collected their groceries.
The horses were visiting the Asda store, in Hartlepool, as part of a John Smiths Brewery Day, which also saw some staff dressed up in period costume.
Joanne Tweddle, events co-ordinator at the store, said: "The horses were really lovely and just stood there, and have been a hit with customers. They really are gentle giants.
"We decided to hold the day to give the customers something different and to raise money for the women's refuge which is the chosen charity of our mayor Stuart Drummond."
