A TEAM of support workers have been presented with a national trophy.
Durham County Council's Welfare to Work service provides people with support so that they can attempt training and paid work.
It was named as the country's Social Services Team of the Year in the Local Government Chronicle Excellence Awards last month.
The Welfare to Work unit works with all of the county council's social services specialist disability teams that provide a service to 16 to 60-year-olds with a learning or physical disability, sensory impairment or mental health issue. Between July 2002 and September 2003, the team worked with 449 people with disabilities who have achieved and retained 123 voluntary jobs, 363 training courses and 85 paid jobs.
The team was presented with its trophy at a meeting of the county council's cabinet yesterday by Councillor Christine Smith, member for strong, healthy and safe communities.
