CAMPAIGNERS who fought to stop pasture land in Richmond disappearing under concrete have been urged to attend a public meeting tomorrow night to decide their next step.
There was a public outcry when it emerged Richmondshire District Council was reviewing its assets and both Westfield and land on the banks of the River Swale could be sold off.
Residents were worried plots could be snapped up by developers. More than 100 people turned up at a meeting at Richmond School to ask the local authority to think again.
The council decided it had to dispose of the land but agreed to sell it to a community trust which would be set up to preserve the land.
The meeting, which will be held at 7.30pm, at Richmond Town Hall, is the first public forum announced by the newly-formed Richmond Open Spaces Trust, and members are hoping for a good turnout.
The trust has already started raising the £120,000 needed to buy the land from the district council.
It will be discussing initiatives to help secure the sale at tomorrow's meeting.
"It's certainly important that we see as many people as possible at the Town Hall,'' said trust spokesman and Mayor of Richmond, Councillor Stuart Parsons.
